The other important factor of prevention is protection against tooth decay. In childhood, the erupting permanent teeth can be protected by the sealing of pits and fissures, which can be repeated until adulthood when needed. By sealing we apply a special material to the pits and fissures of the molars, for the grooves can be so deep that the bristles of the toothbrush cannot reach them. Bacteria and food particles enter these grooves, but these areas cannot be reached by tooth brushing. Sealing in itself is a pain-free and simple procedure, the teeth are not drilled. First of all, we clean the surface of the molars, than we apply a white, liquid dental sealant into the pits and fissures, preventing bacteria and film to enter, and so delaying tooth decay until the child masters a good tooth brushing technique.
The treatment is fast, children stand it well, and it protects their teeth for years. It is good for them to make friends with their dentist, because no drilling is involved, but still the dentist ’cured their teeth’. The sealant can disappear after a few years, or can fracture because of chewing; in this case the procedure can be repeated- even in adulthood. The first sealing of pits and fissures can be performed at any age, the most appropriate time is however the first 6 months after the eruption of permanent teeth. It is important to notice, that the eruption of permanent teeth does not mean the loss of primary teeth, so we recommend applying for control with the last erupting teeth.
According to observations, the first erupting permanent teeth (6) is the first to become decayed in adulthood, they are the first that need root canal therapy, and the first to be removed. Let us prevent this situation together. There is no need to be afraid of the treatment, it is painless and does not cause any discomforts except the few minutes of dry mouth necessary for the durability and accuracy of the performance. Children around 6 stand it well, and in case of sealing more teeth we keep a break after each of them. After the treatment every little hero is given a certificate of Bravery.
