The overdenture is a frequent solution, when a jawbone is totally toothless, or the teeth cannot be helped. In every jawbone (lower and upper) usually 4-4 implant is enough for stability, so that the patient is able to forget about his/her prosthesis. In the daily oral care routine, the prosthesis has to be removed, and cleaned precisely, but apart from that the patient may feel the same as in case of bridges.
The reason for this is not only the stability, but the decreased size of the prosthesis as well. The more stable is the denture fixed on the implants; it requires the least surface design: the palate is in most of the cases free, which helps to get use to it easier, and the sense of taste is improved. For the long-lasting success of the overdenture we have to keep in mind that the charge of the whole dental arch has to be transferred on at least 4 implants, so the usability of mini implants or fewer implants are highly questionable.
At our clinic we use an implant called Ankylos, in size similar to the unique bone supply; we are able to design its connection with the superstructure according to actual needs. Further advantage is that these implants are built into places where bone restoration can be avoided, so not only the expenses, but also the healing time is reduced significantly. Last but not least, is important to notice that in case the toothlessness were caused by periodontal diseases overdenture can hide a extended bone decay, which could otherwise not be aesthetically restored by fixed prosthesis or bridges.
The insertion of implants and the healing is pain-free, and the denture can be made after 3-4 months. If the teeth were removed earlier, in case of a sufficient bone supply the implantation can be done immediately. The operation takes around an hour, and your earlier full prosthesis functions as a temporal one.
